K8VIT, Doug Stewart SK Mr. Douglas M. Stewart, age 67, of Johannesburg died Friday, January 22, 2010. Mr. Stewart was born in Detroit on February 25, 1942. He lived the majority of his life in Royal Oak and graduated from Shrine of the Little Flower High School in 1960. He attended college at the University of Detroit and Oakland University as a history major. Mr. Stewart was a talented guitarist who played in numerous bands and taught many students at Joe Fava Studios, Knight Music and A&R Music. He was manager of the Downriver Jazz Band and was also a salesperson for audio equipment at Hi-Fi Specialist and Anna’s Hi-Fi Stereo, Inc. In 1997 he retired and moved to Johannesburg to enjoy the serenity of the north. He was an avid reader of mystery and suspense novels. He was a ham radio enthusiast, received his operator’s license and became a member of TOMARC (Top of Michigan Amateur Radio Club) and his call sign was K8VIT. Mr. Stewart is survived by his daughter Gwynne (Ryan) Bambach; his grandsons, Matthew and Eric of Troy; his brother Howard (Marguerite) of Florence, AZ; his niece Jean and nephews Howard and Ronald also of AZ; and his cousin, Dennis Coffey of Farmington Hills. He was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Mary (Coffey) Stewart. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at 4 p.m. from the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord, Fr. Ray Cotter officiating. Contributions in memory of Douglas Stewart may be made to Otsego County Friends for Life, through the Nelson Funeral Home P.O. Box 1548, Gaylord, MI 49734.
